Butterflied hearts! by Amanda

Hi Everyone

Welcome to my weekly DT post .

Today I am sharing a piece of home decor that I have created using That's Crafty! Surfaces and 13 Arts papers.
The surfaces are a 4x6 MDF chunkie and a couple of MDF hearts of differing sizes and the papers are from the 6x6  His and Hers Remastered paper collection pad.

There really is nothing complicated about the creativity so its a project suitable for beginners through to the more seasonal crafters/ creators amongst us.

The 4x6 MDF chunkies are sold in packs of 2. They come 'flat packed' for easy construction and they really are easy to construct due to the clever interlocking design of all the pieces. The only 'extra' needed is an adhesive. I always use That's Crafty's Multi surface adhesive as its strength of adhesion is (imho) second to none.
After constructing the MDF I painted it with Black Acrylic paint.

I covered the chunkie with paper from 13Arts His and Hers Remastered 6x6 paper pad using 2 of the co-ordinating  paper designs.
In the photo above you can see the front, below you can see the sides.

Here's the base ( I forgot to take a pic of the top, sorry) ...

....and the back

One of the features I like about That's Crafty! Chunkies is the 'press out hole' on the back panel which gives you the option of being able to hang the Chunkie on a wall aswell as have it free standing.
To hang press the hole out, to stand simply glue the 'press out' bit in place.
I wanted the option of either/or so pressed out the hole and kept the back embellishment free.

The front however I decorated with a focal feature of butterflied hearts.
For this I used 2 That's Crafty hearts, one #5 White/ Greyboard (the larger one) one MDF #3( the smaller one).

The larger heart was covered with grit paste to introduce a touch of texture to the project.  The paste was painted with black acrylic and PaperArtsy French Roast fresco finish acrylics. The smaller heart was simply covered with another one of the paper designs from the paper pad.

Sitting  on the hearts is a double layered butterfly.  Both butterflies can be found on yet another of the paper designs in the paper pad. I simply cut them out, adhered them together, manipulated the wings and positioned them in place on the smaller of the two hearts.
I embellished the thorax of the butterfly with a Tim Holtz Ideology arrow topped with a cameo style gem bead I had in my stash.

Layering the butterfly and manipulating the wings adds both movement and dimension to the finished chunky ......

..... which itself has great depth and dimension.

  1. Love this - the vintage papers in the background and that fabulous butterfly and heart motif at the centre of things. Great texture and dimension as always with your amazing work, Amanda.

  2. The "teaser" photos on your blog were enough to get me here, but what a surprise upon arrival! The texture and depth are truly (almost) palpable here! I love the 50 shades of brown (gorgeous papers) against the black. I have often seen the TH metal arrow used as the body of butterflies, but never with a beautiful cameo gem. Simply elegant!
