That's Crafty!: Gelatos

Donna here today with a tag featuring a fab That’s Crafty! greyboard tree embellishment as the star of the tag.

What I did:

I took a size 8 manila tag and swooshed it through a mixture of red and orange Distress Oxides’ that were diluted on my craft mat.

I kept adding and blotting until I was satisfied with the background, then I heat dried it thoroughly.

The swirly little circles were stamped in the same red shade of Distress Oxide using a hand carved stamp of mine, I just wanted something subtle to add interest to the background without detracting from the sentiment or the tree.

I then stamped the fab new sentiment from Alison Bomber with black Archival ink, I really can’t resist adding sentiments to everything I make!!

The ‘sun’ was dipped into the little pool of Distress Oxides I had left over, this was made from some waxy packaging I had.

As for the greyboard tree, I covered it with a coat of a new wonderful That’s Crafty! rough texture paste (coming soon), applied with a palette knife to resemble rough tree bark. It was then coloured with a mixture of DecoArt and That’s Crafty! paints with a touch of a black Gelato too.

For the finishing touches, I added a little bit of Distress Crayon to ‘ground’ the tree, added a piece of raffia and then added a touch of Stickles to give the whole tag a frosty look.

I’m quite pleased with how this turned out, a walk in the blazing sunshine of a Winter’s day…what could be nicer!

Hi everyone,

Donna here today and I’m thrilled to be featuring one of my new Deep Sea Diva stamps, come and meet Marina ;)

What to do:

Use a That’s Crafty! Acrylic Stack for this. Paint the MDF background with a mixture of green/blue Fresco paints, when dry stamp Marina directly on top using black Archival ink.

I coloured in Marina using my Zig pens but Distress Markers would work just as well or pencils etc, whatever you feel comfortable with.

For the ‘netting’ use a fine black liner pen to draw the netting effect randomly, make sure to keep it squiggly.

Use a white Gelato for the bubbles in the background.

How to layer this is completely up to you, there is no right or wrong way but just be careful that you don’t obscure any of your stamping when you are layering, do a ‘trial’ run first!!

For the other layers, make sure you use Stazon ink as you will be stamping directly on the acrylic this time, anything other than Stazon will smear.

I coloured the images with a mixture of Posca pens but you can use paints too although they will take a little longer to dry.

I added a Tim Holtz sentiment as a finishing touch and assembled the stack which is super easy as you’re supplied with the screw and washers.

I really hope you all like Marina as I had such fun creating her. By the way the little seahorse that hangs from her hair is so easy to detach and use separately too ;)

Here's what I did...

1. I began by cutting some watercolour cardstock into 5x5 inch squares. I then used Gelatos to add some background colour, scribbling with different tones of the same colours, then blending with a baby wipe.

2. Next, I did some tone on tone stencilling with Dinky Stencils and Fresco Finish Acrylic Paint.

3. My next step on the background was to sprinkle on a contrasting colour of Infusions, then spritz with water, and dry with a heat gun.

4. To make my card, I picked out the purple background and used black Stazon ink to stamp a floral design around the edges.

5. I painted a thin coat of Snowflake Fresco on some music sheet, then stamped the focal image from the Black Sheep stamp set, and the quote, then cut them out. I also hand cut a scalloped edge and added some black pen doodling, before gluing it to the edges of the background.

6. I adhered the image and quote, outlined the words with a black pen, then used Distress Markers to colour in the image. I used a round paintbrush to add a splatter of watered down Snowflake Fresco, edged the background with black Stazon, then matted and layered onto black cardstock and a white card blank to finish.

This is the card I made for my lovely sister’s birthday.

Stamp the girl onto a piece of Mixed Media Paper in Archival black and begin to colour first the rose and let dry, then leaves and dry then hair. Use a darker colour under the flower to create shadow.

Using a wider brush and a watery mix of blue, paint a wash around the background of the stamped image.

Use Gelatos to colour the face adding definition to the hair and face with coloured pencils and some Stickles to the flower.

Stamp the Butterfly in Versamark and heat emboss.

Stamp the text in Archival ink.

Cut to size and layer onto black card then the card blank.

Hello all. Well this is my last blogpost as Guest DT for That's Crafty and I've enjoyed my time here massively. Thanks for all of your lovely comments. It's good to see that some of my projects have inspired some of you to try something new.

After making lots of Christmas cards this week, I was desperate to plunge my fingers into some gorgeous paints and just play. "So, basically, you were winging it?" I hear you ask. Well, yes I was, but sometimes that's where the happy accidents happen. It's important to forget being an adult and just play.

I started with an 8x8 MDF panel from That's Crafty. I had received some scraps of sheet music and book pages from an ATC swap so this was the perfect time to utilise them. I glued the sheet music all over the panel using gel medium and applied it over the top to seal it. When that had dried (with the help of my heat tool) I set to with a selection of Dylusions paints. Starting with White Linen, I began applying with my fingers. While it was still wet, I added Bubblegum Pink, making sure to only swipe in horizontal or vertical directions. I must add that using your fingers to paint is optional. I like to feel the paint on the substrate and anyway, I'm forever chucking away ruined brushes that I'd forgotten about.

I digress. Again. I continued painting, adding smears of Lemon Zest and Cherry Pie. When I was happy with the overall colours, I doodled into the wet paint with the end of a paint brush (the end that doesn't need cleaning!) There was no particular uniformity. I just drew whatever popped into my head. Circles, obviously, and hearts, swirls, patterns and even a house. I then used some of my handmade stamps, cut from Speedycarve, and stamped several colours and yet more shapes and patterns onto the paint with Archival ink. Then I stamped over it with bits of junk, like pen tops and loo roll inners, dipped in white paint. When that had dried, I even added the odd squiggle with a black Fude Ball pen and a white Uni-ball Signo pen. I think that was enough background.

Now what I needed was a good focal image and perhaps a quote. There was a large stamp of a face in the Stamper's Anonymous Classic #5 set and also a very fitting quote - "We Don't Stop Playing Because We Grow Old; We Grow Old Because We Stop Playing" - I had played all day and I wasn't ready to stop. I stamped the image onto tissue paper so that I could position it in the best place, then 'drew' around it with a wet paint brush. Only wet with water though, nothing that needed cleaning. Using this method, the excess tissue can be gently pulled away from the image leaving only a feathery border and no straight lines. Then when it is glued into place, the tissue appears to vanish leaving just the image behind. Magic! I printed the quote onto card and chopped it all up so that I could play with it some more, finally settling on a spiral pattern which I glued into place and sealed.

After everything was firmly stuck down, I decided that it wasn't the right image for the background after all. It wasn't playfully whimsical enough and today was all about that. The best way to deal with it was to paint over the top. So I did. Out came my trusty PaperArtsy Fresco Acrylics and with my selection of Blush, Cheesecake, Dusty Teal, Snowflake, Very Berry and French Roast, a brand new character was born. I hasten to add that I had to relent and use a paintbrush, only wiping in between colours with a paper towel. I also had the odd panicky moment, especially when I seemed to have created a scary, orange-eyed monster! But I persevered and I finished off the fine details of the new girl with Prismacolor pencils, then a final frenzy with Gelatos (Lemon, Blood Orange, Red Cherry, Licorice).

What fun I had! It was just what I needed to get back in the zone. It's nice here, isn't it?

Hi everyone,

Donna here today with one of my quirky girls called Heather looking very determined!

What to do:

Start with a piece of white/greyboard (6x6) and randomly brayer on some light Fresco paints. Use a cogs Dinky stencil which has had Distress ink pounced through and position it in the middle, smear a little bit of a green Gelato over it to tone it down.

Stamp the Quirky Girl Heather in the middle over the cogs image and start to colour her in with a mixture of translucent Fresco paints (apart from the face, which is painted with the opaque Nougat shade).

Add a mixture of more That’s Crafty! clear stamps and Dinky stencils, using a mixture of Distress inks and Fresco paints to colour them all in. Remember to keep the stencilling quite muted.

Draw the line the Quirky Girl is standing on and colour in with black and white pens and add some random doodling with the white pen too.

There you have Heather thinking she looks very fierce amongst all the butterflies and the little bird ;)
