How High Can You Fly? by Amanda Southern

Hi Everyone
For this weeks make I have an art journal page for you using only one set of stamps, but what a set of stamps, it's the recently released A4 Stamp Set by AALL & Create 'Take Flight' that I eventually got around to giving an inking.

Here's What I Did:

As is more often than not when I create an art journal page I start with a pop up page and this page started as such as a page in my journal that I had used to clean excess paint of my brayer from a previous project. The colours on this page were from some grungy previous make as the colours were browns and teal with little touches of orange and yellow which I think came from the following page, it all goes into the mix. I didn't do anything to it, as a starting backdrop,  I liked how the wipe off paint didn't fully cover the page and was gappy, it gave it a texture of its own.

The detail that I added on top of the paint background was to use a couple of AALL & Create stencils, I used Broken Circles by roughly adding some Teal paint, lay the stencil in it and then removed the paint around the stencil, reverse stencil technique. When that was dry I stencilled in white through the circular stencil, the white was a bit bright so I knocked back the brightness with some Vintage Photo Distress Ink. Because the page was quite textured I didn't want to risk stamping directly onto it so I stamped the numbers strip, again from the Take Flight set, onto collage paper. This stamp is very long, to long for my project, but the fact I had stamped onto collage paper I could rip it into several pieces and apply where I needed to add it. I tore it into 3 pieces and added to the page using gel medium.

I also die cut the AALL & Create Cells die from old book paper and again added colour to it using Distress inks, Vintage Photo and Peacock Feathers. Once applied to the page, again with gel medium it was a bit lost into the background, so I went around the die cut with a black fineliner pen to make it a little more obvious.

Next was to stamp the central images out, one of the large wings, the smaller wings and the woman. I stamped them onto a page that I had swooshed some Speckled Egg and Antique Linen Distress Oxide onto, even though I knew I was going to add colour to the images the Distress Oxide just gives it some tone and texture. The images were then further coloured using Prismacolor pencils, and on the large wing Distress inks.

I also had to give the woman some grounding to the page so stamped another of the stamps from this set, this time the chevrons, again onto collage paper but this time with white embossing powder. To again tone the white down I added Vintage Photo Distress Ink to my brush as I was adding to my page with matt medium, the Distress ink colour the matt medium. To add a little more yellow and a contrast I added the lines, I suppose they are light glimmers, to the page using a piece I cut from an old credit card. The words for my page "It's not the size of your wings, but how high you can fly" is just from my head and typed out on my vintage typewriter, added to the page and outlined with a black fineliner pen and that is my page finished.

  1. A completely amazing page - I love the wing echoed by the huge wing behind and that layered background is spectacular.
