It's Donna here today with Ella who I've turned into a Boho girl ;)



What I did:

I used one of the MDF Rounds for this which I can't get enough of as you may have noticed! I painted it with a layer of yummy orange multi surface paint which I love so much I even got a colour very similar to it to paint my bedroom wall with....oh yes :)

Then I doodled on the background of the Round with a mixture of Posca pens.

I stamped Ella onto a piece of my beloved Strathmore Mixed Media paper and then proceeded to colour her in using a mixture again of Posca pens and Mermaid Markers for the skin tones.

I fussy cut her out and adhered her to the background with foam pads, added some embellishment around her neck, some twine for the hanging and a little Tim Holtz sentiment.

There you have my Boho Ella looking very glam I must say.

Hello! My softer side has come out to play this week as I was inspired by my ever growing stash of vintage doilies and decided it was time to create something to feature one of them as, after all, I can't really keep them just to stroke can I?!

Step By Step

I created my background on an 8x8 MDF panel which I first used texture paste with the lace background stencil to add a textured pattern - I felt this one just perfect to go with my chosen doily. I then painted the whole panel with chestnut brown multi surface paint.

I next brushed on a thin coat of crackle glaze, covering this with apricot multi surface paint when tacky. Once the crackle appeared and the panel was totally dry, I replaced the stencil and brushed slightly diluted light blue multi surface paint over the raised areas.


I then prepared my embellishments, stamping my chosen flower and a couple of leaves onto scraps of fabric from my stash using archival black ink. I used my stamp platform for this to ensure that I gained a crisp stamped impression on the fabrics.

I ironed adhesive onto the back of the fabric (I used Therm O Web Heat Bond) and then ironed the fabric to interlining fabric (this makes a very cheap and stable backing) and cut the images out. This stops the fabric from fraying and helps to add bulk which makes it easier to glue on a hard surface.


I glued my doily to the panel using dimensional adhesive and placing the glue under the denser areas of the crochet and the area that would be underneath my floral embellishment. I then glued the flower and leaves on top.

I finished my panel with one of the lovely affirmations that comes with one of Lynne's gorgeous new wild flower stamp sets, adding it to a plaque painted light blue and masking off part of the image to stamp in 2 sections that would fit the surface.

Sharing a project, not quite a booklet, yet not quite a card, which was formed from one of the watercolour paper sheets from the Paper/Card Mixed Media pack.

Instructions

Prepare watercolour paper (see HERE) as for booklet with pouch project.
Once dry, make folds. I made four folds, no need to measure!

You decide if you prefer to stamp before or after forming the folds.

Stamp Wildflowers onto the panel, including second generation stamping.

Flip the panel over and stamp the tree twice. To create variation and also, it works nicely when stamping a tree to the left and right, for the left side tree, after inking it up, take a baby wipe and remove the ink from the uppermost branch which bends to the left...now stamp. It gives a more pleasing balance for the eye, than having both trees with that branch leaning to the left side.

Onto pieces of rice paper, margin of book text, etc, stamp Affirmation from Set 7 in full. For the others, ink up only selected words from various Affirmations, such as silence,

whispers, find strength, calming breath and also each season of your life.

Machine stitch pieces of dyed calico to the panel, continue machine stitching with the stamped words, choosing to layer some with fragments of other papers prior to stitching.

Layer a few pieces of found papers, placing "each season of your life" along the top edge, topped with dyed calico.  Machine stitch this to middle panel of rear side of watercolour paper. This creates a little journaling area.

When stitching, it helps if the back side of the stitching will also create a nice stitched detail.

It's Donna here today with a head swap and who doesn't love a good head swap right?! Meet Saffie who is Fred's big sister and she has plenty of attitude let me tell you :)


What I did:

I used one of the gorgeous little greyboard tags from That's Crafty! as my base, coating it with a layer of their scrummy yummy black Gesso for a lovely chalkboard finish.

I stamped the body from Lilith (AALL and Create) and the head from Freddy and Friends (That's Crafty!) onto a piece of Strathmore Mixed Media paper and coloured them in with a mixture of Mermaid and Distress Markers. They were fussy cut out and put to one side while I took a white Posca pen and just added some random doodling to the background of the tag.

I then stamped a hat (Poppy and Daisy Collection) and the thought bubble (from Bentley) onto more Strathmore paper and coloured the hat in the same way as mentioned before.

I then adhered everything to the tag with small foam pads to add extra dimension and drew a little white line to connect the balloon/thought bubble to Saffie.

I added a snarky comment from Tim Holtz and a piece of twine as the finishing touches.

I firmly believe this is what Saffie thinks of her family....especially her little bro Fred ;)

Hello! I hope you managed to catch That's Crafty! on Tuesday with the lovely Jo Channon and saw all the gorgeous new products and the fabulous new quirky designs by Magda Polakow. I had the privilege to work with these to make a couple of samples for the show and I have the first of these to share this week featuring the gorgeous fish stencil which I've used in a rather different way. You might need a cuppa too as the post is quite photo heavy!

Step by Step

I made the background on the panel first by initially brushing on white gesso because I knew I wanted to use some spraying and misting to create a watery effect. I then used some stencils with texture paste to add the bubbles, dappled effect, seaweed and texture sand paste for the shells - using the fossil stencil.


Once everything was dry, I added dabs of lime, teal and yellow multi surface paints and misted with water to make the paints run down the panel, adding aqua and basil matte sprays to the mix. It does give a lovely streaky watery look if you let the paints run.



I then used diluted multi surface and shimmer paints to paint the raised texture areas, using a dotting technique on the shells and streaking technique on the seaweed as I wanted it to look as true to life as I could manage. Adding metallic pearl paint to the bubbles and light dabbles gave them a subtle shine.



My next task was to create my fish which I did by spreading light texture paste on mixed media paper and letting this layer dry. I then used the fish stencil on top with texture paste to make the fish shapes. I chose images facing in both directions for variety, turning the stencil over in some cases.



I cut the fish out when they were dry and painted them with multi surface paints diluted slightly with water - the paints are quite thick so if you paint with them you can add water to make the colour go further as you don't usually need it to be that thick.

Once the paint was dry I brushed 3D gloss gel over the top to give the fish a nice shine. I also brushed it on the shells and seaweed as it really makes the colours pop.

I then decided to add some bling to the background which I did by gluing on some green and aqua sequins. When they were dry I brushed glitter glue over the top, adding a touch to the shells too. I glued on my fish, placing them on the sections first to decide on the final arrangement.

This week, I thought I would share a sample I made for the That's Crafty's May appearance on HOCHANDA. 

This hanging features Rice Paper and Teabag Paper.  At the time I worked with papers included in the Surfaces A5 Journal Kit but the good news, there is a new kit available, Surfaces Mixed Media Paper/Card Kit which also includes the aforementioned papers and many more.

Instructions

Torn pieces of eco dyed calico, rice paper, teabag paper, pieces of calico and book text, where adhered to the large Round. Onto this, two of the daisies were stencilled with Light Texture Paste. Once dry, the daisies were lightly coloured with Distress Crayons, working with Hickory Smoke, Ground Espresso and Walnut Stain - the Light Texture Paste provides the light contrast. A waterbrush was used to activate the crayons.
