Today I am sharing an an Art panel I have created that radiates a glow of light thanks to distress inks and some of That's Crafty's fabulous Craftyboard lightbulbs. Craftyboard is a new That's Crafty! surface and as well as the lightbulbs that I'm featuring today there are several other designs in the range. They can all be viewed in the shop here.
I began by adding colour to card using what I know as Tim Holtz 'Wrinkle Free Distress technique'. I simply added Distress inks to my craft mat, spritz them with water, smooshed the card through the wet ink, dried with a heat gun and repeated the process numerous times until I was happy.
I then stencilled the wrinkle free Distress background with 'rays' using one of Tim Holtz layering stencil. Again I used Distress inks.
Due to the stencil being narrower than the card the rays had to be stencilled in 2 steps. First on one side of the card and then the other, flipping the stencil over to work with on the 'other side' of the card to ensure the rays would mirror themselves. I also had to extend some of the rays due to the size of the card being longer than the stencil design and also because the central point I'd worked from was lower than the actual centre of the card.
Note: this is one of Tims 'Shifter' stencils that is designed so you can 'shift' the stencil to create a background pattern full of rays with small gaps in between the rays.
I haven't (on this occasion) used it in that way as I only wanted to create a single pattern of rays that would leave large gaps between the rays.
A black fineliner pen helped add some definition to the rays and some black soot distressing around the sides of the inky panel did the same.
I added some stamping detail using a text and a crackle stamp from a couple of Tim Holtz Stampers Anonymous stamp sets before matt n layering the background onto cardstock and then geyboard to give it more rigidity.
For the focal feature I used some of That's Crafty's new Craftyboard Lightbulbs. They are sold in a sheet and all you have to do is push them out of the sheet and alter them in whatever way you choose or they could be used 'as is', too. There are 11 hanging light bulbs and 6 bulbs on the sheet all varying in size and design so lots to choose from.
I chose to work with 2 sizes of the hanging lightbulbs to create my focal feature. They were simply painted with Black Acrylic paint and hung from a black 'off cut' of plastic I had in my stash of 'bits'.
A couple of the 'pop out' pieces from the lightbulbs were also painted black and used as end features of the 'hanging bar'. I also added a few brass brads to embellish the 'bar'.
To finished off I stamped a quote taken from a PaperArtsy Eclectica stamp set designed by Alison Bomber:
'If there be light then there is darkness'
The quote seemed to suit the imagery and overall design perfectly!
