I've gone very mixed media this week for my second steampunk make and it features one of the new Prima moulds, the clockwork sparrows which I had to have as soon as I saw it!
Step by Step:
My chosen substrate this time is my favourite upright shape, the MDF jagged edge top. I used the 6 x 6ins cogs stencil to add a pattern to the top section with sand texture paste and used the same paste with the cogs background dinky stencil to add a pattern to the base.
Once the paste was dry, I brushed on diluted chestnut brown and ocean multi surface paints to give the background some initial colour.
I then took a variety of metallic multi surface paints and dabbed these on with a stiff brush to create a mottled effect.
I next created my embellishments. I used the Prima mould to form the largest sparrow with modelling clay. Once it was dry (this took a couple of days as the clay was quite thick), I painted it with an undercoat of black gesso.
I then painted some cogs and pieces of MDF waste with black gesso. Once dry, I scraped on some sand texture paste.
I painted the sparrow with a variety of plain and metallic multi surface paints to resemble the actual bird.
I assembled the upright as shown using dimensional glue as necessary. I then added a bit more detail to my sparrow with black paint to make him look even more dimensional. Isn't he just adorable.
