That's Crafty!: That’s Crafty! Metallic Paints

Hi there, I have a bright and jazzy ATC sized shrine to share this week, which was inspired by the new greyboard Hummingbird, which I really love. I saw him dipping into a flower and the rainforest theme popped into my head as the perfect setting.

Recipe:

I first gave all the pieces a coat of white gesso. I then used the modelling paste on the frame and the back section, forming a vine like pattern on the frame and giving the back section some vine like textures.

I painted the frame with a mix of diluted Chestnut Brown, Green and Black Multi Surface Paint, then added in some highlights with the Charcoal Shimmer Paint.

I next painted the front areas of all the box back sections with a mix of Purple, Dark Blue and Green Shimmer paints, adding some shadow detail under the vines with Charcoal and Purple. Once everything was dry, I stuck all the sections together using a glue pen and fixed the decorated frame on the front.

I painted my hummingbird, a flower and some butterflies with a mix of the shimmer and multi surface paints until I was happy with the effect.

I then made my tropical leaves by painting a piece of mixed media paper with green and gold paints. I drew rough leaf shapes on the reverse and cut my leaves out. I added veins with a ball tool and made them stand out with a dark green pencil. I then shaped the leaves a little with my fingers and added some highlights with gold and orange.

I glued the flower and hummingbird on the back section, using silicone glue for added dimension. I then glued on the butterflies and leaves (plus a couple of orangey shaded die cuts made with the Tim Holtz Garden Greens set from my bits box) with the same glue until I was happy with the effect.

There you have it – one tropical rainforest!

This Monday, I will show you a piece using one of That’s Crafty’s square white/greyboard panels as my surface, for a little magic !!

I started covering it with a light coat of the wonderful Bronze Metallic Paint, and when dry I gave it a very thin coat of Charcoal Shimmer Paint, to darken the shine a bit, on the right side. Again letting it all dry, and after, I used the beautiful Dinky stencil: Tree mask, with Archival Ink Coffee – only the half showing on the right side of the surface.

When dry, paint with Bronze Metallic Paint twice, to make it shimmer beautifully, and after the two layers have dried, paint the leaves with Pearl Metallic Paint, also twice, to give light and life to the tree. Add details onto it, to give a feeling of bark, with a Brown Writer and when satisfied draw around it all with a black Sharpie.

Now stamp the words taken from Lynne's Affirmation Set 2 and stencil the word Magic, from the Dinky Stencil Enchanted, directly onto the surface, with Archival Ink Jet black and lastly, stencil the Dinky stencil Crow, also using Archival Ink Jet Black - mask the ones around him so not to stencil more than one bird.

I wanted to use one of the heads from the new Eclectica stamp set, Everything Art and stamped her on a skeleton leaf using StazOn Spiced Chai. When layering it over a dark surface it shows beautifully. So I used a scrap of dark brown fabric and mounted it with Golden Matte Medium, turned a copper thread around it, adhered it to the surface and carefully painted the leaf around the head, with the Bronze, to show the tiny veins. I’m sorry you can’t see the shine on my photo.

The last little detail was to add a piece of wood, found on the ground, on top of a golden piece of tulle on the bottom, knotted 3 strings of cord together and adhered it to the left side of the woman panel and adhered a metal button to the fabric too. Give Mr. Crow a bronze eye, a necklace and define his wings with a pencil dipped into the bronze paint.

Hello, this week I am sharing a project which was a sample made for That’s Crafty’s recent HOCHANDA appearance. This was my first time playing with Rubber Dance stamps, the Textured Flowers.

Instructions

I like to paint the white side of the white/greyboard panels with Gesso but that is just me with my funny quirks! The ATC size panel and greyboard butterfly were also painted with Gesso.

All three Frescos were applied to the above, working quickly to create texture. Onto the panels, the pretty Pearl metallic paint was applied in the same manner as the Frescos followed by dipping paintbrush into Antique Gold metallic, creating clusters of small dots.

A Texture Flower was stamped onto both panels. Knowing I would be adding a child, I decided to elongate the flowers. To do this, I simply extended the stems with a Sharpie fineliner pen, adding stamped leaves. Near the bottom of the panel, small flower head was stamped with stems and leaves doodled. Stars were also stamped.

The ATC panel was adhered to main panel. White paint pen dots were added to all flowers. For the butterfly, Frescos were applied before stamping doodled circles at an angle, again adding white dots. Charcoal was applied to edge of butterfly and smudged. An Affirmation was stamped onto a piece of tea bag paper. This was attached to threads which were wrapped around centre of butterfly. Gel Medium adheres the threads to back of butterfly, before adhering to panel. Affirmation and threads flow freely.
