That's Crafty!: July 2017

Happy Monday everyone, can you believe it's the last day of July already?

I've been having a sort through some of my That's Crafty! creations and came across this Tag. As it's my day to showcase a make I thought i'd share it with you all and hope to pass on some inspiration using the ever popular Serena from the Serenity Collection.

I started by gluing a piece of watercolour card (an off cut mop up of Distress inks) onto a blank Tag. I then distressed areas of the card using a nail file. Clear 3D gel paste has been pushed through the That's Crafty! Leaves Stencil and left to dry.

Stars from Lynnes Affirmations Set 1 have been stamped using Versamark and given a dusting of mica powder to bring them to life.

Serena has been stamped on to a gessoed piece of card and coloured using watercolour pencils. She was then cut out along with the heart and layered onto the tag with foam pads and glue. Glitter glue and an embellishment or two have given her that extra sparkle and Gold Lustre wax to bring out the transparent leaves.

Dots and dabs of Frantage Embossing Powder have been added randomly around the tag using a Versamark Pen and heated with a heat tool. Wording stamped and assembled from set 2 of Lynnes Affirmation gives a thought for the day and Gypsy Cord with a handmade charm completes my tag.

I can’t believe it is already August tomorrow, this summer, which in Denmark, haven’t felt at all like summer, is going so fast, I’m sure many of you feel the same J

Well, here is my Monday post for you!!

Start with a piece of cardboard and cut it to a size that you wish for a card. I sprayed it heavily with the new beautiful Sparklers Spray Red. While drying I thinned another Sparklers Spray, with water, in a spray bottle and give light sprays on the upper part of the card and lower right corner.

When dry, stamp the beautiful butterfly stamp, designed by Melina, directly on the right side with Jet Black and colour it - I used Brush Markers and the middle big stamp, from the set of 3!!

The circles from Texture Stamp Set 2 was then stamped around the butterfly, first with Worn Lipstick and after on top of it with Coffee.

One of the lovely Bits & Pieces flowers was first painted with Shimmer Paint Red mixed with a little gesso, to create a pink tone - it was also used under the butterfly. Then I added details and a brown upper part to the flowers, with a brown Brush Marker and a Micron Pen and green stem. Lastly, I sprayed with the Sparklers Spray Red again. Another beautiful embellishment, the dragonfly was painted with the same pink as the flower and then stamped on the wings with the crackle stamp, also from Texture Stamp Set 2, to add the feeling of real wings. The body was painted brown and details all over, made with a black Sharpie.

From the Dinky Stencil Enchanted, I stenciled Beauty using Coffee Archival Ink, to top left corne and on a piece of cotton fabric, I used half an affirmation from Lynne’s Set 1. It was adhered next to the stamped Beauty.

I had been lucky to find a bathroom “sponge” (plastic netting tied together to form a sponge) in a lovely soft pink colour and it was perfect here, to tear in little pieces and add under the dragonfly and over the stem of the flower, together with a piece of lace I had lying on my table. Edges were sponged with Archival Ink Coffee and then I adhered the card to another piece of cardboard, to form a frame. Then I stamped the smallest butterfly from the stamp set on a piece of transparent plastic, saved from a card box. I fussy cut it and adhered it to the butterfly, to give a feeling of movement. I’m sorry it is almost impossible to catch on the photo.

The last thing to do was make a hole through both layers of cardstock, with a Crop a Dile and knot a length of sari silk to create a hanger for the card.

That’s Crafty’s Bits and Pieces Greyboard Embellishments, wings, are so absolutely perfect to be used with Relics and Artifacts Imperial Eggs. I included part of one of my Affirrmations as I see her as someone who is breaking from her shell, finding her wings and ready to “fly every upwards”.

The handmade paper which was a gift from the lovely Dorthe was the perfect addition, as it reminds me of downy feathers!

Extras: Handmade paper (thanks Dorthe!), twig, re-cycled silk sari ribbon, rusted tin wire, teabag paper or natural tissue paper, crochet lace

Instructions

Apply Gesso to wings (that is my preference). Follow this by painting the wings and Imperial Egg (with decorative top and wooden base) with Frescos. On the egg and wings, create a stippled effect and on the decorative top, dry brush Toffee and Chocolate Pudding.

Adhere wings to rear of egg before adhering all to wooden base. Then add the decorative top.

Stamp one of the women from EEA06 onto teabag paper, layering onto found papers before adhering to recess of egg – I didn’t want it set too deep into the recess. Tear pieces of handmade paper and layer around image.

Wrap re-cycled silk sari ribbon around twig, binding with rusted tin wire. Adhere this in the gap between top of egg and the decorative top. To this, adhere a strip of teabag paper stamped with partial Affirmation.

Finally, attach jump rings to the eye screw which is already supplied in the decorative top, threading through two colours of silk sari ribbon.

This is now ready to display on a door knob or mirror as a visual Affirmation.

Hi everyone,

Donna here today with a tag using all my own stamps and those lush Oxides of course.

What to do:

Take a size 8 manila tag and swoosh through some Oxides smeared on the craft mat and spritzed with water. Keep going until you achieve the effect you want, dry thoroughly between the layers.

As the weather has been, shall we say, a little Autumnal here in the UK when it’s supposed to be the height of Summer, I was in the mood for stamping a toadstool but I didn’t have one.

That’s why I love stamp carving so much because if you don’t have a certain type of stamp in your collection then get carving!! As long as you take your time over it then anything is possible. Here’s the toadstool I ended up carving for the tag.

I thought I’d then mix up my carved toadstool with my little bird designed for Rubber Dance and the butterfly and leaf designed for That’s Crafty! Stamp everything with black Archival ink and then proceed to colour in with undiluted Distress Markers for stronger saturated colours.

Add a bit of doodling with a black fine liner pen and my favourite white Posca pen, which I use on everything!

Finish off with a couple of sentiments from the Clippings Book, another thing I absolutely adore.

Yes the tag does have an Autumnal feel but hey hopefully that will encourage the sun to come back out then!!

Hi there, I think my post today should actually be called the tale of how the lotus flower became a waterlily as that’s the stencil I used for my mixed media pond life scene.

Recipe:

I first spread a layer of modelling paste all over the MDF panel, it doesn’t need to be too thick, just enough to give a good texture to the surface. When the paste was dry, I painted on a coat of white gesso, following this up with a mix of blues and white for the sky element and a mix of greens for the pond surface. When it was dry, I added a little green shimmer paint to the water for some subtle highlights.

I then used the Lotus stencil to add my waterlilies with modelling paste. This took 2 goes as I had to stencil on 2 quite a distance apart and let them dry before adding the rest to avoid smudging the flowers. Once they were dry, I painted them with shades of pink, white and a touch of yellow. I used grey to add a shadow round them to make them pop.

I drew the lily pads on mixed media paper and cut them out. As I wanted to fit some round the flowers I placed the stencil over the flower, put the lily pad on top, lifted it up and flipped it over so that I could draw a pencil line in the sections that needed cutting out. I painted them with a mix of greens, adding copper highlights for some shimmer. I glued the leaves on with dimensional tape for a 3D look.

I painted some dragonflies with Green and Turquoise, adding Grey to the bodies and a touch of Copper. I added a pattern to the wings by inking up the dragonfly wings stamp with Copper paint and pressing the painted dragonflies onto the stamp. I added these to the panel with dimensional tape.

I stencilled on a few tiny dragonflies with the Dark Blue Shimmer paint to add interest to the sky to finish off.
