That's Crafty!: DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics

Hi everyone,

It's Donna here today with a cat wearing a bowler hat....nothing unusual about that is there?! This is no ordinary cat though because this is Fred from a brand new stamp release from That's Crafty!

What I Did:

I had a little nose through my stash of Gelli prints from a mammoth printing session a while back and selected this one you see here. You can use any paints for Gelli printing but I do like the Decoart Media Acrylics as they're very free flowing. I think the background was created either by bubble wrap or sequin waste being pressed into the paint.

So now Fred and the hat from the Ella stamp set were stamped on some Strathmore Mixed Media paper and then coloured in with Mermaid Markers that had been very well diluted.

I then fussy cut them both out and adhered them to the front of the Gelli printed background.

I then mounted all of it on a Kraft Card (yes I know I use it all the time) and added a Tim Holtz sentiment.

There you have Fred just doing his own thing and looking very bemused about it all too!!

Hi everyone. I treated myself recently to a couple of the new PaperArtsy Zinski Mini stamps. I don’t normally do cute but I couldn’t resist the little cat and dog stamps.

I started this card with a painted background using DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylics – randomly painted in blues and greens (colours below). I added some stencilling with Tim Holtz Splotches layering stencil and That’s Crafty! Circles Dinky stencil and some random background stamping. No great plan here just building up a background.

I stamped (black Archival) the cat over the painted surface and then coloured in with markers. As I was working on top of a green background my colours are a little muted – next time I might paint him or fussy cut to get a little more impact and colour.

I added a little Tim Holtz Design tape and some random doodling with Posca Pens. The circles and Happy Birthday are from Emma Godfreys Birthday stamp set (EEG18).

Hello! Stencils are one of my most used items and the Dinky range from That’s Crafty! are a permanent feature on my desk. These cards use three of them – 2 different sized circles and some squares (details below).

I took some card (9.5cm sq. to fit on a 10cm sq. card – 4’’). I started by swiping a little tinting base over part of the card in patches and then adding DecoArt Quinacridone Magenta in the spaces and blending a little. It didn’t matter too much as I would be adding more layers. Next I added PaperArtsy Fresco (Chalk) through the larger of the circle stencils, followed by Ultramarine through the grid and finally Hansa Yellow through the smaller circles. I used Cut and Dry Foam to add my paint – ensuring the sponge was not too wet and also heat dried between colours.

I stopped here for the first card but decided to keep going with the other – using the same paints and stencils but in a different order.

I stamped a Crazy Cat on each one, the stars from PaperArtsy ELB30 and a greeting from my stash. Finally I took the transparent Hansa Yellow again and painted the cats.

Recipe:

I cut a piece of mixed media paper to fit my chosen card blank and chose to use the top end so that I could use the torn off end as part of my card – I love the texture this adds to the design.

I coloured the paper by adding drops of the green gold and yellow paints to my craft mat, misting with water until the paint ran, then dipping the paper in to pick up the paint until I was happy with the effect.

I next stamped on the script image from the texture stamp set with the fern green ink, stamping in a random fashion. I used the harlequin stencil to add random texture with the modelling paste. When it was dry I brushed on the 2 shades of green paint to add contrasting colour.

I cut a panel of black card a little larger then the snowdrop stencil and used a stencil brush to create my snowdrops using the green gold and white paints. I used a couple of coats to build up the colour. As you can see, the image really pops against the dark background. I trimmed the panel a little and added mats of dusty yellow and dark green (I actually used Distress cardstock as the colours are fabulous).

I assembled the card as seen in the photo, adding my chosen sticker to finish.

Recipe:

I first coloured the page using the orange and yellow paints, which I applied to the surface with an old store card in a random fashion until it was roughly covered.

I then placed the Tina stencil on the page and holding it down firmly with one hand, used a combination of stencil brush and a fairly dense sponge to apply the Lavender paint to make the head image – you can probably tell how much I love this stencil as she’s already featured on another of my journal pages – I just love her waves of hair which are so versatile.

Next, I stencilled on the Groovy text using the alphabet stencil which is fab as it’s rather funky to make words by masking off around the letters you need and as you can see, the different sizes give a rather quirky and fun look. I stencilled in black for a bold look.

I stamped a number of flowers using just the head of the larger flower in the Beki set, stamping on scraps of bright Gelli printed papers from my bits box. You could just as easily use plain bright paper or scrapbook paper or stamp on white card and colour them if you wish – the choice is yours!

I cut the flowers out, shaped them a little with an embossing ball tool and added them to the head image with foam tape for dimension.

To finish my page, I used the Dinky flowers stencil to apply a flower pattern around the edges with the magenta paint.

Recipe:

The Tina stencil is fabulous as you not only get a stencil but also the cut out piece to use as a mask which came in very handy for my journal page.

I placed the mask on the page and holding it down firmly with one hand, applied the black DecoArt paint over the rest of the page using a compressed sponge. These are good to apply paint over quite a large area as you don’t get seepage under the mask quite as much.

I removed the mask and when the paint was dry, placed the stencil over the white space left by the mask and coloured it with a mix of orange and the Quinacridone Gold. I then used the script stamp without an acrylic block to apply a random pattern over the head using the brown ink.

I then used the clock stencil over the head to add a partial image using the black paint. I did this by placing it underneath the Tina stencil to check the placement and make sure the numbers ended up in roughly the same place as they would on a clock.

I next stamped the bubbly image from the textures set around the edges of the page with the copper ink and finished off by adding the “dreamy” text around the stencilled head.

I’m sharing another page from my A4 journal today. I do love working on this size there is so much room to play with colour.

As always I began with a coat of gesso.

Next I began painting the background blending the yellow, green gold and blues diagonally acriss the page.

I created the flower petals by placing the side of the brush covered in gesso in the page and repeating in circles to form a flower head.

When dry I over painted using the two Magentas. The stalk and leaf were added using gesso, fude pen and green gold paint.

I stamped my quote on white card in black ink and cut out the words, gluing them with matte medium.

Last week I showed one of the large (A4) white/greyboard journal pages I had made. Today I am using the small versions – both were launched on Hochanda last week. These small pages are 5x3 inches.

I put 2 pages together – to make the front and back of a journal (when you add the ring binders) and added DecoArt Fluid acrylics in patches on the whiteboard side. (Cadmium Red, Cadmium Orange, Hansa Yellow and Blue/Green Light). I added some black with a credit card and adhered some book page scraps which I toned down with watered down colours. It was all still a bit too bright – so I dry brushed a little white paint randomly over the surface too.

Next I stencilled using That’s Crafty! Dinky stencils. I used Archival ink for the harlequins and raindrops and white paint for the circles (Bubbly All Over stencil). I stamped a couple of quotes from the new Inspirational Quotes stamp sets and cut out the phrases to fit.

Finally I added white and black doodles around the edges of the boards and words.

Gesso

We have all been playing with the new That’s Crafty! white/greyboard journals which come as a pack of one A4 and one 3 x 5 inches. Being board they can take a lot of punishment without warping so using paints, texture and stencils is a joy.

I took one sheet from the A4 Journal set and gave it a coat of gesso, it’s optional but I always do. Next I pounced black paint through the alphabet stencil.

Next I added dabs of the two blue and green gold paints to the board and used a baby wipe to move them around so there are patches of distinct colour but the whole has a covering. I pounced with the white paint through the Poppy stencil to create the flowers and when dry added a further layer lower down with the green gold.

Finally the quote was stamped in white paint.
