Butterfly Acrylic Page by Melina Dahl

11:00

On a previous post I showed you how I made the cover of the MDF/Acrylic book, and now it´s time for the first acrylic page. I never worked on an acrylic surface before, so this was a “learning by doing moment” for me.

I started by stamping on the backside of the page with StazOn ink. In this stage you really need to think and plan your stamping, stenciling and layers. You are going to see it from the front, so actually you are doing the background at the last. Think backwards and you´ll be fine!
When my stamped images were dry I started coloring with the new shimmer and metallic paints. Soon I learned that they wouldn´t stick to the acrylic surface. So, I took clear gesso and used a brayer to get a thin coat on the surface. Once dry the paints had something to hold on to, and the coloring went perfect.

Once the butterfly and circles was colored I added a coat of white gesso to the back of them, so the next layer wouldn´t shine through. These shimmer and metallic paints are not permanent when dry, but by carefully dabbing the gesso on the backside the paint didn´t move that much.

In the next step I used different stencils to start building the background. Once dry I took my brayer again and carefully went over the whole surface with blue shimmer paint. This way the previous layer didn´t move. When that layer was dry I went over with a few coats of white gesso, also with a brayer.
At last I stamped my quote on the front of the page and also added a few splashes of white gesso.

Done! It´s so much fun to try something new :)

I used:

StazOn - Timber Brown
That’s Crafty! Shimmer & Metallic Paints - Turquoise, Pink, Green, Blue, Charcoal, Yellow, Light Gold
