Oxide Resist and More by Fliss Goodwin

Hi there, I have the results of some experimentation with my new addiction, those amazing Distress Oxides to share this week, which I think show a new way to use these yummy inks in conjunction with stencils. These were done a day after my recent eye op and consequently in a rather haphazard way which I think suits the way the inks work when they come into contact with water.

Ingredients:

That’s Crafty! Clear Stamp Sets – Textures Collection Set 2, Lynnes Affirmations Set 1 & 2
Distress Oxide Inks – Spiced Marmalade, Worn Lipstick, Peeled Paint
Contrast Plain Darker Card
Some Bling – pearls or gems
Sponge Applicators – I used make-up sponges
Iron and copy paper or newspaper

Recipe:

I made a masterboard so that I would have enough paper to make several cards. I started off by using the stencil with Versamark ink to apply patches of pattern to my mixed media paper, which I then heat embossed with clear powder. I did this bit by bit, adding ink and embossing before carrying on with the next section as I didn’t want the ink to dry before I embossed it. It’s also quite hard to see being transparent!

The next step was to add some ink to my craft mat, mist it with water and drag the embossed paper through it to pick up colour. I began with orange and picked up colour until I was happy before repeating the process with pink and then green inks.

Once I was happy with the inking, I placed a piece of copy paper over the top and ironed off the embossing powder with a dry iron. I then repeated the inking process with pink and green oxides. As you’ll see, the end result here is lighter areas, which contrast with the earlier areas where I built up the colours.

I then made a further piece of inky paper, this time just picking up water misted ink from my craft mat using the pink shade. When it was dry, I stamped over the top with the same ink and the alphabet texture stamp followed by some double circles with the orange shade.

I made my cards by cutting up the stencil resist paper into 4 and distressing the edges. I die cut some butterflies from the pink paper and cut the remaining piece in half for 2 more cards, distressing the edges as for the other paper. I also die cut some darker toning card for the butterflies. As mentioned, I used the original detailed butterflies die set but if you have the mini set, you should be able to get even more cards from the paper.

I stamped some of the lovely text from Lynne’s Affirmations stamp set on the paper with the plum ink and assembled my cards, adding some bling lurking in my stash to the butterfly bodies – I’m on a mission to use up some of the gems as I seem to have accumulated rather a lot!
