That's Crafty!: February 2017

Hi Everyone

I have been playing with some more of the Laurel Burch stamps by Stampendous.

Here’s What I Did:-

I started with a gelli printed page that I had in my stash, this print used several colours of acrylic paint and stencils.

I then stamped directly onto the gelli print using 2 of the Laurel Burch dog stamps. I have then coloured the dogs using Colourblend pencils which work fabulously over acrylic paint. I wanted to add some paint splatters so just roughly masked off the dogs and flicked yellow, orange and black paint.

I then stamped the sentiment which is from Katzelkraft. For a little extra detail I have doodled around the edge using black and white pens.

It was then mounted onto black card and added to an 8” x 8” card blank.

This is the card I made for my lovely sister’s birthday.

Stamp the girl onto a piece of Mixed Media Paper in Archival black and begin to colour first the rose and let dry, then leaves and dry then hair. Use a darker colour under the flower to create shadow.

Using a wider brush and a watery mix of blue, paint a wash around the background of the stamped image.

Use Gelatos to colour the face adding definition to the hair and face with coloured pencils and some Stickles to the flower.

Stamp the Butterfly in Versamark and heat emboss.

Stamp the text in Archival ink.

Cut to size and layer onto black card then the card blank.

This week I am sharing another sample made for Stitches. This time, instead of a shrine, it is the frame of the shrine, layered to a That’s Crafty! white/greyboard, which I discovered was the perfect size when paired with the largest shrine’s frame.

This project is about how we all dream art and how creating art inspires us all.

(NB – I didn’t have enough That’s Crafty! white/greyboard tags and time was against me for ordering more, so I hand cut two tags from one of the white/greyboard panels)

Instructions

After applying Gesso to frame and panels (my preference but not essential), apply Grunge Paste to frame. Once dry, apply Infusions to both panels, misting generously with water, allowing colour to drip downwards. Leave to dry (you can use a heat tool but I prefer to leave to air dry).

Prepare MDF heart with Gesso followed with crackle paste and Infusions. To the wing, apply with fingertips, Grunge Paste, applying only randomly and not covering the complete wing. Again, stain with Infusions.

Now all elements are dry, first, add stamping to one of the white/greyboard panels and frame. Add white paint pen details. Adhere frame to this panel.

For second panel, hand-cut two tags (or use That’s Crafty! white/greyboard tags). Stencil a word onto each tag. Add details with random stamping, layering of torn pieces of mop-up papers and doodling with pens. Layer, with more torn pieces of mop-up paper to the prepared frame.

To top of frame, adhere the prepared heart and wing, embellishing with stamped word and vintage button.

Finally, stamp words (taken from That’s Crafty! stamps – so many useful words within those Inspirational Quotes), adhering to artwork, within the frame.

If you take a look at the shrines, you will see there are a variety of styles and sizes.

Hi everyone,

Donna here today with the sweetest little balloon girl for you!

What to do:

Use a sheet of Strathmore Mixed media paper for this as you’ll be using Distress markers for the colouring. Draw a little curved line with a black fine liner pen to give the little girl something to ‘stand on’ then stamp the image on top using black Archival ink.

Start to colour it in with a mixture of Distress markers, dilute first with a water brush for a softer effect. Use a blue Distress Ink pad and a Dinky stencil for the bubbles effect at the top of the card, pouncing the ink through the stencil.

Stamp the clouds separately with Hydrangea Archival ink, fussy cut out and adhere to the top of the card with foam pads to make them stand out.

Finishing touch is to add a few splatters with the water brush (you can do this if you dilute the Distress marker colour enough) and add a Tim Holtz sentiment.

Love this little girl…..you can’t be unhappy when you hold a balloon can you ;)

Hi there, I have a card to share this week featuring one of the lovely Prima Princesses, surprisingly large images that are perfect for a little colouring therapy as I was keen to see what my eyesight could cope with now that I’ve had one of my eyes sorted out. I really enjoyed it and hope you like how it turned out.

Recipe:

Stamp the image on mixed media paper with the black ink. Despite the size, the image does stamp well but if in doubt about pressure, I can recommend placing the paper on the floor on a craft mat, laying the image on top and then standing on it. This may seem strange but it does work! I used to teach classes and this method used to go down well with some of my older ladies although they did have to hang on to their chair whilst doing it!

Colour the image with watercolour pencils, drawing out the colour with a dampened paint brush, and then add more detail with coloured pencils, particularly to the flowers.

Use the stencils with the Distress inks to add some pattern around the image. Just go with the flow until you’re happy with the effect and then ink around the edges with the pink after trimming the paper to fit your card blank. As the image is so large, I made my own card blank from a piece of A4 card, scored in half. You could also use an 8x8 pre-made card blank if you prefer.

I added the image panel to a narrow mat of black card for contrast and then glued it to the pink card blank. I finished off with some Big Chat stickers, which I coloured pink with the Distress ink before adding to the card.

Hi everyone. A little change of style from me today! I recently bought the new special edition Tracy Scott PaperArtsy Fresco paints so decided to have a play. A friend also lent me some older JOFY stamps – so I have combined the two to make a few cards.

I started with some backgrounds using Prawn, Butternut, Tangerine Twist and Chalk Fresco paints. Some swiping with a credit card – building up layers, another background using a paint brush and one spritzing the leftover paint and building up a splattered background.

Next I started stamping, cutting and punching – I used the flowers and butterfly from JOFY 32. The cut out flowers are mounted on kraft card that I have added some gesso to. I use an acrylic block for this – paint it with white gesso, turn it over and lay on the card. I love this effect.

I had lots of my backgrounds left – so made a couple of other cards too. The swirls are from Tracy Scott’s stamp sets – ETS01 and ETS08. A little bit of doodling with black and white paint or gel pens adds some highlights where needed. The birthday greeting is from my stash.
