That's Crafty!: Spectrum Noir Coloured Pencils

Hi everyone

I have a clean & simple make for you this week using Tim Holtz fabulous new stamps in his crazy range this time it’s the Crazy Dogs and as a dog owner, I have one that looks like the little guy at the front, I love them all.

Here’s What I did:-

I first die cut the polaroid and with the photo section it cut from the frame I stamped my trio of crazy dogs. The front chap was stamped first and then stamped again onto a Post It Note and cut out, this would act as a mask to allow me to stamp either side of him so that they appear to be behind him. Once stamped I then coloured with coloured pencils blending the colour with paper stumps and blending solution.

I then stamped the balloons onto a separate piece of card coloured and cut out. I then stamped the text onto the polaroid frame. I then fixed the photo and balloons to a piece of white card and doodled the balloon strings on with a fine liner black pen. I then positioned the frame and added using 3D foam squares. I even added a little chap and sentiment to the inside of the card.

Hi Everyone

If you regularly follow this blog you will have seen the team share their fabulous projects that we all made for That’s Crafty’s recent appearance on Hochanda TV to launch yet more new products within their alterable substrates. One of the recent additions is a fabulous range of MDF covered acrylic paged albums, you get 2 MDF covers and 3 acrylic pages. There has been some fabulous post recently of what the team have done with them and I would now like to share mine with you. I got the chance to play with the Keyhole album and decided to make it into a nature themed collection. This post is bit longer than my normal post due to sharing all the pages with you but I hope you like it.

Here’s What I Did:-

For the covers of my album I wanted to create the effect of a leather bound look and to do this I firstly gave both of the MDF covers a coating of white gesso. I then stencilled texture paste through the Moc Croc Dinky stencil, drying and repeating until it was fully covered. I then used several brown colours of Fresco Finish paints to create the brown I wanted, there is a mixture of opaque and translucent paints used. When fully dry I covered it all with a gloss gel medium. I added the word band, my initials with metal letters and rusty pen nibs and the last touch, a feather from one of my own chickens.

For the inside cover I covered it with a piece of designer paper from my stash and stamped onto it. I have also aged it slightly using Distress inks.

For this first acrylic page I started by working on the reverse first by stencilling the blue Prima Alchemy paint through the Moroccan Dinky stencil, then painted over with PaperArtsy old gold paint. On the front I then stencilled texture paste through the Floral Background Dinky and when dry sprinkled with Infusions and lightly misted. It is then very easy to just wipe off the colour from the acrylic leaving it only on your paste. I then stamped the dragonfly onto a torn tag and sprinkled with the same infusion colour. To finish I added the stamping to the acrylic with Stazon and added a word token that I had wiped paint over so that it coloured the engraved text.

For the second page, the reverse of the first, you will see that I am working on the gold that peeps through onto the first page. To break up the gold I have stamped text randomly all over it. I then stencilled using texture paste through the Dinky Fleur stencil. I lightly coloured this when dry with Distress inks. I had stamped and coloured the butterfly onto water colour card and cut out. I then covered it in clear crackle gel and added to my page. Final touch to add the sentiment.

Here you can see the fabulous crackle that the gel produces.

For this acrylic page I have first stamped the butterflies on the front with black Stazon and then these have been coloured from behind with Fresco paints. I have then stencilled through also on the front using Honeycomb Dinky stencil and Stazon ink applied with Cut & Dry Foam. I then added a page from an old nature book to the reverse.

On this side I have simply stamped and coloured with coloured pencils onto the book page and then aged slightly with Distress inks.

Again with this page I started with the reverse colouring the acrylic page with a selection of browns of alcohol inks applied with the alcohol ink blending tool and a little alcohol blending solutions to lighten the colours. On the front I then stencilled texture paste and coloured as per technique on a previous page. I stamped the flower onto watercolour card and coloured with Distress inks, distressed the edges and wrapped with jute, I added that on top of a piece of bandage that I had coloured with Distress inks. Text to the image has been added using Remnant Rubs.

My final acrylic side is on top of the alcohol inks that pops through the stencilling of the other side. I stencilled the flight of Butterflies Dinky stencil with texture paste, coloured with Infusions when dry and then covered with Glossy Accents which really makes the butterflies shine. I love how the design of the stencilling from the other side shows through. I then heat embossed my sentiment on in white and added some Remnant Rubs.

Hi Everyone

That’s Crafty! are producing a wide variety of acrylic shapes, stacks, ATC’s etc, and I have to be honest I wasn’t convinced, I think the main reason of my dismissiveness was my own fear of the substrate and I didn’t really know how I was going to use them. As I love to embrace new products and techniques I took the plunge and having played now on this surface and made several pieces, which I’ll share in future posts, I am a complete convert! You can throw a myriad of products at these babies!!!

For this week’s post I have used a single acrylic ATC and been playing with image transfers onto the acrylic.

Here’s What I Did:-

Starting with an acrylic ATC I wanted to see if I could transfer onto it a picture that I had found in a magazine. I roughly cut the picture larger than the ATC, which is the silhouette girl on a pale blue background. I covered the image and the ATC with image transfer gel and then stuck them together brayering over to ensure that there were no air bubbles between the 2. I then left this overnight to fully dry. Once completely dry I then misted lightly with water and began rubbing off the paper so it left a translucent image behind, you have to be really gentle with this stage to ensure that you don’t completely remove the image or background colour. Then let it dry completely again.

Onto the front of the ATC I stamped the rain drops with black Stazon and coloured them from behind using coloured pencils. The pencils work as the thin layer remaining from the image transfer gives you a layer to be able to colour over and the pencil also maintains the translucency.

I then stamped a background onto thin white card with black Archival ink and then using gel medium stuck that to the back of the ATC again brayering over it to ensure no air bubbles. Once fully dried I trimmed off any excess card. To add some dimension I added Glossy Accents over the rain drops which gives a lovely dimension on the acrylic, sadly the photo doesn’t really pick this up. The final addition was to add the sentiment, I’ve rubbed over the acrylic with an anti static bag to ensure a clean stamping of the Versamark embossing ink which I then added pink embossing powder to, the embossed sentiment has also got a translucent look on the acrylic.

As a first attempt of image transfer on acrylic I am quite pleased with how it turned out. I think I might have to try transferring a photograph next and I will share my attempt with you all.

Hi Everyone

I have a one layer card for you today using another of the recently released
Carabelle Studio stamps.

Here’s what I did:-

I started with a piece of mixed media card and stamped the large butterfly using black Archival ink. I then stamped it again on a large post it note, cut out, and used as a mask. Once the mask was in place I then stamped over it using the circles and dots stamp and then removed the mask. Once my images were stamped I started colouring. For the background I diluted down some grey Brusho Crystals and painted on as a water colour paint.

I then coloured the circles, again in watercolours. To make the butterfly stand out from the page I added some shadow using a black Spectrum Noir coloured pencil and blended it into the grey Brusho using a paper stump and blending solution.

I then stamped just part of a sentiment from a PaperArtsy set as I wanted to replace the word colour with die cuts instead of just stamping it on. I die cut the letters using pieces of coloured card that matched the colours of my coloured circles.

I then matted it onto black card and then onto an 8” x 8” card blank.

Hi everyone,

Something fishy for you this week as I’ve played with the recently released Crafter's Workshop stencil “Mini Tribal Fish”.

Here’s What I Did:-

I started with a piece of Strathmore Mixed Media Card and the stencil. I dabbed Distress ink directly onto the stencil using a selection of colours of the mini Distress ink pads. The size of this ink pads work fabulously for this technique but always start with your lightest colour in order to not contaminate your ink pads. Once you are happy with your Distress ink coverage give the whole thing a light misting of water, don’t over saturate the stencil. I then carefully pick up the stencil and lay the stencil, coloured side down, onto the card smoothing over using kitchen paper which also picks up any seepage of colour.

The pattern or image of your stencil is now transferred to your paper with a lovely water colour effect.

This close up shows how the Distress ink colours the fish.

For the background, again I used Distress ink this time using it as a water colour applying the ink to my craft mat and picking it up with a water brush or wet paintbrush.

When I was happy with all the colour I laid down the stencil again carefully lining it up and then with a black fineliner pen drew around the shapes of the stencil. Once done I removed the stencil and joined up all the gaps in the lines making the fish whole. To add further interest to my fish I doodled in the white gaps left in the stencilled fish. I got quite carried away with my doodling so added a matching doodled frame to it. I felt the fish just had to stand out a bit more so coloured all the edges with some matching colours using Spectrum Noir pencils. A sentiment from Tim Holtz Chit Chat Sticker Book finished it off. I then matted onto black card and added to a card blank.
