That's Crafty!: That’s Crafty! Surfaces MDF Panel

Another Monday - rainy here and with a little blue sky in between. Just as the weather was when I started this panel using an MDF surface, 6x6 inch.

It was painted over with White paint and dried. On top I added a very water thinned Walnut Brown and let it run down the panel, in some places. After dried, I stenciled Water Drops onto upper part of the panel with texture paste.

Left to dry, I painted Dove, toadstools, tree and 3 leaves - first in white paint and then I added a good layer of gesso to the tree. To create texture, I used a toothpick to create patterns on the tree trunk. When it all was dry, I mixed a tiny amount of Brown with Yellow to get a kind of warm light nature tone, for the toadstools and leaves, in certain places and also added details to the toadstool with brown fine liner. The tree was also painted with the light nature tone. All was again left to dry and while waiting, the panel was now ready to be sprayed with Infusions Sleigh Blue on the upper part. On to that, I dapped Teal paint onto the water drops and made splashes all over by tapping the pen.

The tree and toadstools were painted with Distress Crackle Paint and I also smeared it onto the panel in a few places, to create more texture. The 3 leaves were given details with the Chestnut Brown and a thin brush.

When the crackle paint had dried, Chestnut Brown paint was smeared into the cracks and then quickly removed from the surface and mostly left in the crackles to show wonderful patterns on both toadstools and tree. The tree branches I painted with the beautiful Chestnut Brown too.

I adhered nature coloured lace and some found bark pieces to the bottom panel and on top, adhered the toadstools and tree. The dove was given detail with a brown fine liner and onto a brown bag, I stamped one of Alison Bombers beautiful quotes, cut the words apart and adhered to panel, together with the dove. A little White paint was smeared around the word panels, to make them pop a bit.

I have created a wall hanging this week, again on one of That’s Crafty! MDF panels.

Here’s what I did:

I picked a background which had been a piece that I smeared excess paint on, I think there was even a bit a finger painting on this one. I have stamped the deer skull directly onto the background using Tim Holtz Stamping Platform. I do this so I can paint the image and then stamp the detail back in. I have used this painting technique many times recently as without a Stamping Platform, previously this would have been nigh impossible. I have painted the skull with PaperArtsy paints. I have then added detail and a little contrast using coloured pencils. All the stamped feathers on the skull I painted with white and then doodled in the black with a black fineliner pen. I then mounted the piece onto the MDF and trimmed the edges.

The sentiment is from one of the latest sets of words, selected by Alison Bomber, for PaperArtsy. I have heat embossed it in white onto black card.

To add a little more detail I wanted to make some feathers that matched and hang them from the hanging. I used some of That’s Crafty! greyboard small feathers. I painted them with black and heat embossed the white details on using a couple of different stamps. I then hung them from tiny screw eyes using fine jewellery wire.

Hi Everyone

Halloween is creeping up on us and I love that we can make spooky, creepy makes especially as there are so many fabulous new creepy products to play with. I have a wall hanging for you this week that uses some of the stuff released for this year’s Halloween makes.

Here’s What I Did:

I have made my piece on one of That’s Crafty! MDF Pieces, this one is the 4.5” x 9” a perfect size for a wall hanging. To make the background colour I worked on a piece of black card with Distress Oxides picking up the water misted colours from my craft mat. I love that on black card they look even more chalky and that you don’t lose the colour even though they are on black. I die cut, from the background, 3 of the claw mark dies (you have 7 to choose from in the set). Where the claw marks were cut I painted the MDF with red paint and then dulled it down a little by rubbing over a little black ink. From black card, I also die cut the cobweb die. I then glued the background card onto the MDF with That’s Crafty! glue. Once dried I then trimmed the card from around the MDF. I then glued on the webs and trimmed then to fit. I darkened around the edges of the background using black archival ink with a round blending tool.

With the background done on the MDF I started on the characters. I stamped the Elenazinski creatures with Memento black ink as I coloured them with alcohol markers, I used Copics but there are many similar markers. I wanted them to form part of each of the letters of the word FEAR which I had cut out in white card on my Cameo Silhouette. Each letter was then coloured with Twisted Citron Distress Oxide and Black Soot Oxide and I went around them all with a black Sharpie pen as I don’t like a white edge. I splashed red ink onto them as blood splatters. I then glued each character to a letter and added them to the hanging using 3D glue gel for some dimension. I then stamped and heat embossed in red, mwahahahaaa from the same set, onto the hanging to finish it off.

Hi Everyone

I’ve been playing again with my favourite, That’s Crafty! MDF board
which is the 9” x 4.5” piece.

Here’s What I Did:

First thing to do is give the MDF a light coating of gesso, I do this using a piece of Cut and Dry Foam to avoid it not only going on to thick but also avoids brush strokes remaining.

One that is dry I then blended, in stripes, 3 colours of Dylusions paints using a wide flat paint brush. Using 3 colours actually creates a finish of 5 colours as the colours blend beautifully where they overlap each other (lime into the teal and pink into the teal).

I then stamped onto the board using the flowers, the centre of the flowers come empty put you can stamp into them using an available coordinating stamp set, which I have done. I then painted out the background with black paint, I used PaperArtsy Little Black Dress paint for that as I wanted a totally matte finish. To finish the flowers I highlighted parts of the flowers using a white paint pen.

The last touch was to add the sentiment which I heat embossed, to ensure I got a crisp finish I first tap over the area with the anti -static bag before stamping and embossing it.

Hi there, this week I have an art panel to share as I just got my inky mitts on one of the lovely stamp sets by Darcy Wilkinson for PaperArtsy which I couldn’t resist and the colours I used were inspired by the new collection of one of my favourite clothing lines which featured lovely shades of pink and green.

Recipe:

I applied the paint to the MDF panel this time with a brayer, layering the colours on and starting with the lightest pink and green, following up with the medium shades. It’s really just a go with the flow process as I know if I repeated it, it wouldn’t turn out exactly the same but I quite like that as it makes your creation unique.

The next step is to make the circle pattern on the panel as I was aiming for a sort of bokeh effect again. I cut a piece of thick card and die cut a couple of circles from it to make a homemade stencil. I then used this to make a circular pattern with the lightest pink and green paints.

I then used the bubbles stencil with the darkest pink and green paints to add more pattern to my panel, overlapping some of the large circles to add depth. I also added a few more larger circles with the green shade.

I stamped the flower on a scrap of deep pink paper from my Gelli print box using the olive ink and stamped the leafy vine on a green scrap. I drew a stalk on the green scrap and then fussy cut everything out. I stamped just the flower centre on green and cut this out too.

To assemble the panel, I stamped the text from the set on stamping card using the Cactus Flower and Fern Green inks and trimmed this to a panel. I then glued all the elements to my panel using some foam tape for the flower head, layering the images for added dimension.
