That's Crafty!: That’s Crafty! Dinky Stencil Bubbles Background

Donna here today with a tag for you featuring a fab little fish from Lost Coast Designs.

What I did:

I used a size 8 manila tag to randomly brayer on some Fresco paints in blue and white.

Take the ‘bubbles’ Dinky stencil and dab through some green Distress Oxide, I always love the effect this gives over paint.

Next step was to stamp the images from the Lost Coast Designs set and I also used my very own starfish and seaweed from one of the Deep Sea Divas sets. All the stamping is in black Archival ink.

For the colouring in I used watercolour pencils, which I then activated with a water brush.

I then added a little doodling with my favourite white Posca pen, edged around the tag with a black inkpad and added the words from Tim Holtz clipping stickers.

A little bit of raffia was added as a finishing touch and there you have the little fish happily swimming away without a care in the world ;)

Hi Everyone

I have, for this week’s post, been playing with one of the acrylic stacks by That’s Crafty! and some of the newly released Laurel Burch stamps by Stampendous. I forget how much fun creating these stacks are and really should play with them more often.

Here’s What I Did:

The acrylic stacks come in various designs and sizes, you get three layers of acrylic and one of MDF and then 4 bolts to hold them all together when finished.

Each layer of acrylic is covered in a protective film so I removed just one side of film from each of them. I have 2 methods of painting the images on the acrylic, one is to stamp on the acrylic and paint the reverse side, the other, which is the method I have used this time, is to stamp the image and then paint over the top, this is easier but you have to remember that as you will show the other side your image will be reversed so you can’t do this if the stamped image includes text.

So I stamped my images, some of the new Laurel Burch stamps, with black Stazon which can be a bit slippy so this is so much easier using the Tim Holtz Stamping Platform. Stazon is the best ink to use on acrylic as it is so fast drying and permanent. Once I was happy the images were all stamped in the right place on the acrylic, I stack them together before colouring just to check, I then started colouring my stamped images with Posca paint pens. I then painted the MDF as my background for my acrylic layers. I have used PaperArtsy Fresco paints and the That’s Crafty! Dinky Bubbles stencil. Once happy remove the rest of the protective covering.

Here you can see all the backs of the acrylic layers, the other advantage is that you can go over the lines at bit as you won’t see it when they are the right way.

Here’s the layers now the right way around (remember these are reversed)

Once you are happy with the finished painted look and your paint is totally dry just stack them all together and secure with the included bolts as in main picture.

Donna here today with the sweetest little balloon girl for you!

What to do:

Use a sheet of Strathmore Mixed media paper for this as you’ll be using Distress markers for the colouring. Draw a little curved line with a black fine liner pen to give the little girl something to ‘stand on’ then stamp the image on top using black Archival ink.

Start to colour it in with a mixture of Distress markers, dilute first with a water brush for a softer effect. Use a blue Distress Ink pad and a Dinky stencil for the bubbles effect at the top of the card, pouncing the ink through the stencil.

Stamp the clouds separately with Hydrangea Archival ink, fussy cut out and adhere to the top of the card with foam pads to make them stand out.

Finishing touch is to add a few splatters with the water brush (you can do this if you dilute the Distress marker colour enough) and add a Tim Holtz sentiment.

Love this little girl…..you can’t be unhappy when you hold a balloon can you ;)

This is a piece I made for the launch of the online Mixed Up Media Magazine and it features one of those brilliant That’s Crafty! Stacks but I wanted to try it with lots of white space.

The base layer of MDF has a coat of gesso and texture paste through the Dinky Stencil.

On the next two acrylic layers I stamped various Carabelle Stamps in StazOn colours on each side. The top layer has Azoline coloured with Posca Pens and the text stamps.

Recipe:

First paint the tag with the gesso to give a good surface for the paint layers. I next used sponges to apply a mix of green, white and yellow paints to the tag. I ended up with a sort of marbled look, which was not quite what I was aiming for but after it dried I decided I liked it! Serendipity rules OK!

I then used the Bubbles stencil to add a pattern on top of the paint, first with white paint, then with lavender until I was happy with the effect.

I stamped the girl and fish image on white stamping card and painted them with the Paper Artsy paints. I painted her hair with lilac and lavender – I still have a thing for purple hair.

I added the images to the tag with foam tape and added strings of pearls to her hair to finish.

Hello everyone, it’s Fliss here today to share the first part of my nature themed triptych which I’ve made double sided so that I can turn it round sometimes to show the reverse which I’ll be sharing next week. This side is soft and gentle as I was thinking of a meadow on a balmy summer evening and is just the ticket for some chilled out thoughts.

Recipe:

First paint all the panels, back and front, with the gesso and allow them to dry. Next sponge the top half of each panel, back and front, with a mix of blue and white paint, then dry brush with white and deep pink to give the effect of a sky turning to dusk. Sponge the lower half of the panels with a mix of yellow and green paints and dry thoroughly.

Now for the stamping. I started at the left hand panel working in a sort of sweep from left to right across the panels. I stamped first with the small grass like image, using olive and plum ink. I stamped the images higher up on the edges, lower across the centre to form a gentle dip in shape.

I carried on stamping with the fern green ink and added in some wild orchid using another of the wild flower stamps. I then stamped on the dandelion type image with Versamark ink and heat embossed the images with white embossing powder.

I stamped the tiny asterisk style images from the PaperArtsy set on the panels with Versamark ink and heat embossed them with white powder. I think they look just like dandelion clocks drifting in a gentle breeze.

I stamped the tiny butterflies on stamping card with the olive ink and coloured them with watercolour pencils then cut them out. I glued these to the panels as you see. As a final touch, I added some detail with the bubbles stencil and some deep pink paint. I then assembled the panels with the jump rings provided with the triptych set.

Recipe:

As with my Brusho Crystal holder I started with the base as it wouldn’t be seen unless upended and enabled me to be happy with the effect before embarking on the rest.

I sponged the base with the 2 shades of yellow paints and allowed this to dry. Whilst it was drying, I cut a strip of thick card and die cut 2 circles in it, slightly larger than the largest bubble in the stencil.

I used the homemade stencil and the bubbles stencil with the 2 shades of orange paint and the lighter yellow to add a bubble pattern all over the painted base.

Once the paint was dry, I stamped the dotty border round the edges using the hydrangea ink. I also swiped on a little of the lavender paint to draw all the elements together.

As I was now happy with my decorated base, I repeated the painting, stencilling and stamping on the remaining elements on both sides and happily they’re all a lot smaller and didn’t take very long at all.

Once all the pieces have been decorated, glue them together with some strong glue.

As you see, it’s a lot easier than you might think to create a lovely storage box for your treasured ATCs.
