That's Crafty!: DecoArt Media White Modelling Paste

Hi there, Fliss here today to share the cover of my new art journal which has to be quite sturdy as I intend taking it on nature walks with my travel paint palette so that I can do some painting if the mood takes me!

Evergreen type leaf sprigs

Recipe:

This is really simple to make as all you need to do is spread a layer of texture paste over the cover, including between the spiral binding if your journal has this.

Next, take your evergreen leaves and press them gently into the texture paste. I used a longer one next to the spine and shorter leaves across the bottom. Carefully remove the leaves and you will have a lovely impressed pattern – perfect for a nature journal. Leave to dry completely.

I coloured the cover with the Multi Surface Green and Antique Gold paints, watering them down a little for a slightly washed out look. The paints are highly pigmented so a little goes a long way if you dilute them. Once the basecoat was dry, I then went to work with the Charcoal Shimmer paint and some gold, both of which were also diluted, to pick out the detail in the leaf impressions. This bit is the one I enjoy the most as you can totally transform the look of the cover.

As a final touch for my simple cover, I sponged a little green shimmer paint and antique gold paint on my chosen chipboard quote chips and stuck them on with strong glue.

I’m sharing one of my samples here and I can’t tell you how much I loved working with these fabulous new products – they’re all amazing!

Recipe:

The first thing to do is to apply the texture paste to the upright section of the art panel. It needs to be fairly thickly spread and then comes the fun part – use the wooden skewer to draw a tree bark pattern into the paste. Make sure you don’t cover the bits that slot into the base, as this will make it very difficult to put together later.

Once the paste is dry, paint with shades of grey, brown and a little green paint using the DecoArt acrylics. I find the easiest way to do this is to add large drops of paint to a craft mat or ceramic plate and then pick up the paint with a fairly wide brush. You can mix it up a much as you like as that way the end result will be much more realistic.

Once the paint was dry, I brushed on the shimmer and metallic paints lightly to give the surface some sheen. I then painted the base to match.

The next task was to paint my embellishments and for these, I searched the internet for colour inspiration for the toadstools and found an amber shade with spots that I really liked. I first painted the greyboard with the buff shade and then mixed yellow and burnt sienna with the buff to form my chosen shade. I completed the painting and added a little detail with a brown pencil.

I painted the leaves using a very easy dipping method. This involves adding a puddle of several paints in shades of Autumn to a plate, swirling the colours together and then pressing the leaves into the paint. I had enough to colour quite a few leaves so these will be appearing a bit later on this year.

My final task was to paint the bird and I have to admit to first painting up one as a robin but there wasn’t enough contrast so I decided on a greenfinch and once again used a photo from a Google search as inspiration. I hope you like how my little fella turned out.

Once I had painted everything I assembled my panel using silicone glue to give it dimension.

Hi there, this week I have a Spring card to share which came about after a certain song popped into my head due to the lovely sunny weather we’ve had over the last few days – can you guess which one?

Recipe:

I cut a piece of mixed media paper to fit my chosen card blank and chose to use the top end so that I could use the torn off end as part of my card – I love the texture this adds to the design.

I coloured the paper by adding drops of the green gold and yellow paints to my craft mat, misting with water until the paint ran, then dipping the paper in to pick up the paint until I was happy with the effect.

I next stamped on the script image from the texture stamp set with the fern green ink, stamping in a random fashion. I used the harlequin stencil to add random texture with the modelling paste. When it was dry I brushed on the 2 shades of green paint to add contrasting colour.

I cut a panel of black card a little larger then the snowdrop stencil and used a stencil brush to create my snowdrops using the green gold and white paints. I used a couple of coats to build up the colour. As you can see, the image really pops against the dark background. I trimmed the panel a little and added mats of dusty yellow and dark green (I actually used Distress cardstock as the colours are fabulous).

I assembled the card as seen in the photo, adding my chosen sticker to finish.
