I Have a Dream by Donna Gray

Hi everyone,

Donna here today and I’m sticking to the heart theme this week it seems! I’ve used one of the new heart substrates today for this make and Prima water-soluble crayons.

What To Do:

Take one of the large MDF heart shapes and cover with a coat of Gesso, making sure it’s completely dry. These are thick and will stand up to anything you throw at them…I know because I’ve tried it!

For the face and background you’ll need just a box of the new Prima Water-Soluble Crayons. These are absolutely brilliant and I can’t recommend them highly enough.
For this creation I’ve just concentrated on using them as traditional oil pastels so I’ve only used my finger and cotton buds to blend them, I haven’t activated them with water…..I’ll show you a version of them wetted later ;)

You’ll need to draw a face for this but if you’re not confident about doing that, That’s Crafty! have just received some very nice face stamps that I’ll list in the supplies section that can be used instead.

Once the face is drawn/stamped, proceed to colour in with the crayons, blending as you go. I scraped some of her hair with my fingernail as the crayons’ are so thick and creamy, to create more texture.

To create the background, cover with 2 shades of crayons, blend in. Next taking a Dinky stencil and a moist baby wipe, start dabbing through the stencil to remove some of the background, remember that as these crayons are fully water soluble, the colour will start to lift off.

For the finishing touches, use a couple of stamps with black Archival ink from Carabelle. Outline the girls features with a dark colour pencil, an ordinary pencil will do, don’t use a pen as it will clog with the oil pastel…..I know this only too well!

There you have a really versatile heart shape to work with plus some lovely crayons that in my opinion are the next best thing to Neocolors II.
