Artist Trading Coins and Holder by Anne Redfern

Hello!

This is my penultimate Guest post and I thought I would go 'large' for this one
creating ATCoins and a wall holder for the coins.

The holder was very much  inspired by one created by Amanda Southern, depicting the Union flag HERE.

I decided to create one depicting the flag of my homeland, Canada.  Image my delight when I saw that Laura sells a beautiful  Maple Leaf Stencil/Mask in the shop!

Here is what I did:

1) I started by covering the base of a That's Crafty ATC coin holder with a layer of Gesso. Once the Gesso was dry I applied masking tape and painted the centre of the panel white.
2)  I masked again and painted the edges red and stencilled the maple leaf in the centre.
3)  I lightly sanded the whole piece.
4)  I attached the shelves and painted them to match the corresponding areas of the flag.
5)  Finally, I applied a layer of watered down white paint to give it a whitewashed/weathered appearance.

Once I was happy, I moved on to the coins.

6)  For the Peacock coins, the base was given a light coat of paint before stamping the images. The Peacock Feathers were coloured with watercolour paints and fussy cut to add to the top of the coin. The Peacock was stamped directly onto the coin and painted with watercolour paints.
7)  I created the backgrounds for the pencil ATCoins, smooshing the coins through Distress Ink on my craft mat, adding some stencilling, again with Distress Ink. The pencil images were stamped direct to the coins and coloured with watercolour paints.

8) The dragonfly backgrounds were created on my Gel plate, using various colours of paint and an AALL & Create stencil.  I placed the coins directly onto different parts of the Gel plate to pick up the colour and patterns.
9)  The dragonflies and hearts were stamped onto a piece of cardstock which was used to pick up the remaining colour from the Gel plate, fussy cut and added to the coins.
10)The last coin in that group was created by stamping directly onto the coin, the flower was stamped separately, coloured and added to the coin to give some dimension.
11)  The backgrounds for the flower row of coins was created using paints and a brayer direct to the coins.
12)  The flowers were stamped directly onto the coins and a separate set stamped onto plain cardstock, watercoloured, fussy cut and applied to the coins.
13)  The background for the final row of coins was created using Distress Inks.  The chess pieces were stamped directly onto the coins, stamped again onto cardstock, coloured with Distress Ink, fussy cut and applied to the coins.
14)  The sentiments throughout were taken from the individual stamp sets, stamped and applied to some of the coins.

I love these coin holders, it always seems a shame to me to create the coins and then store them in a box.  This way the coins can be changed as and when you like (assuming you are not giving them away to friends of course) and the holder itself is a lovely piece of home decor.

Products Used:

Gel Press Rubber Brayer 4 inches
Cardstock from my stash
Paintbrushes from my stash

Thanks so much for your visit, I hope to see you again next week
for my final Guest appearance.

Crafty wishes, Anne  xx

  5. A fabulous way to display all those amazing AALL & Create stamps Anne, I have to agree those coins really are too nice to be stored away. I'm making good use of my one and have recently purchased the smaller sizes from Hochanda, a new find for me! Can not wait to have time to play & create. Thank you for the inspiration.

  6. Oh my goodness, you've outdone yourself with this magnificent collection, Anne! The Canadian Maple shield looks amazing, and I love your sets of ATCoins. The coloured pencils look so good against the weathered paper backgrounds, and the peacocks are stunning with those feathers exploding off the edge of the coin. I love the (almost) monochrome green set full of natural elements too. Well, I love all of them really. A fantastic penultimate guest piece. You know you've set the bar pretty high for your grand finale now!
