Hello Everyone
I am so happy to have been invited to be a Guest Designer here at That's Crafty! Today is my first weekly post and I have a 6x6 mixed media project to share with you that is a little on the grungy side but with a touch of natures beauty.
The base of the project is a That's Crafty! MDF 6x6 square. These are great quality and an excellent price. I primed the MDF surface with a smooth coat of gesso using Cut n Dry Foam. I then added more gesso but this time I applied it with a palette knife and only roughly here and there. I repeated the process using Grit Paste. Using a palette knife helps give more of a rough finish which is what I was after.
Next I introduced colour. I used PaperArtsy paints (see products list below) with a brayer to do this. At any point I wasn't happy out came the gesso to help knock back the colour and add an extra bit of texture.
Then I stamped randomly around the background using a selection of texture stamps with Archival ink.
I stencilled firstly with paint and then with Grit Paste using a new release stencil from Seth Apter/ Stencil Girl called 'Retreat'. The paint stencilling helps create a shadow around the Grit paste circles giving them great dimension and more of a 3D effect.
I embossed the central inner broken circles of the stencil design with Deep Sea Baked Texture Embossing Powder as well as embossing around all 4 sides of the 6x6 and sprinkling some powder into the outer circles.
I stamped a die cut circle with the word 'Be' and added a few painty splatters too - I just love to splatter!
The focal point is a Seth Apter die - Loop de Loop die, cut from card stock numerous times, all adhered together to give it depth and dimension. It's covered with a light application of Grit Paste with some Deep Sea Baked Texture sprinkles here and there.
This provides the platform for that touch of nature's beauty I mentioned at the start - the beautiful glossy butterfly embellished with a piece of Tim Holtz Ideology and a gem bead.
A few extra gem beads added to some of the outer circles finishes off my mixed media panel,
Be.....
Products used:
A selection of Seth Apter/Impression Obsession stamps but you could use any texture, background script stamps etc- there are some great ones to be found here , here and here.
