This piece uses plaster bandage to create highly textured/moulded flowers which stand proud of the base. This is achievable because the MDF panel is so sturdy it can take the
plaster work on the top.
Cut strips of the plaster bandage a little wider than the
panel and following the manufacturer instructions to wet apply to the panel
leaving in wrinkles and buckles for texture.
Cut strips of the plaster bandage about 2 inches x 12
inches. Again follow the instructions
for wetting then fold into rosette type shapes, and apply to the board creating
three flower shapes. Each flower will probably
need 2 strips.
Take strips ½ inch wide and long enough to form stems for
the flowers again wet and squash or roll into stem shapes and apply.
Leave to dry, overnight preferably.
Apply a coat of medium I used Matte Medium but you could use
gel medium, even PVA watered down 50/50 with water this ensures the plaster is
sealed before adding the wet paint.
Paint the background with the Cobalt Teal and Cobalt
Turquoise. When dry add a glaze of 50%
Quinacridone Gold and 50% Glazing Medium.
Leave for 5 – 10 minutes then remove with a
baby wipe, this helps highlight the texture.
For the flowers apply paint using the darker shades of red
in the nooks and crannies and lighter shades and white on the tips. When dry add dots of black to form the
stamens.
Paint the stems with the yellow green and the edges with
black.
