An Unfortunate Ending by Amanda Southern

 Hi Everyone

And welcome to Spooktober "Mwah ha ha"! I love Halloween makes and couldn't resist my first make of October being one of them.

I have again this week used another of the fabulous images from Katzelkfraft (the bird) and teamed it up with lots of Tim Holtz goodies.

Here's What I Did:
The base that I am using for this project is a couple of different sized That's Crafty! MDF Coffin Tags but I haven't worked directly onto them I first prepared on mixed media card (you could also use watercolour card) my background. My background was creating by mixing several colours of Tims inks using both original Distress inks and Oxide inks. I just added colour from the ink pads to my craft sheet and lightly misted with water then started picking up the colour directly onto my card. This technique is just 'rinse & repeat until you get an effect you are happy with. I then glued my inky card to the MDF tags and trimmed.
I then added some stamping to the background of the top tag using Tim's new Renaissance stamp set, I stamped this is Vintage Photo Archival ink but any brown would do, I didn't want it black this time as I wanted it to be a bit more subtle. Next using another of Tim's new stamps, for Halloween, Anatomy Chart stamp set I stamped out the pieces I needed. As I needed the hand from both a right and left perspective I stamped once directly onto stamping card and then again onto collage paper then reversing that over and glueing to stamping card with matt medium, I now had a pair of hands which I gave a bit of colour using coloured pencils. Having gone around the stamped top tag I went around the edge of it all with vintage photo distress ink and then wrapped the hands around the tag and glued into place.

The bone I stamped and cut out 3 times and coloured to match the hands and added to the bottom of the tag. These would also act as something for the bird to be running over. The bird I just love he looks absolutely petrified I think lol. He comes from one of another of the new stamp sets from Katzelkraft, Les Oisals, he was also coloured with pencils before I put him onto the tag.

The top of the tag has the number 31, which I die cut using an old Tim Holtz Movers & Shapers die and gave it a smearing of crackle paste, left it to dry and then grunged it up with a mixture of paint and Distress crayon. The bats are That's Crafty! Craftyboard pieces which I inked with Black Soot Distress ink, slightly sanded back and then added Distress Vintage Photo ink to.

The wording 'an unfortunate ending' as he really isn't going to get away is he? is a Tim Holtz Halloween Quote Chip, I have lightly sanded it and coloured with Vintage Photo Distress ink before adding to the piece.
To add a little more texture and detail I ripped some bandage tape up, coloured it with Distress ink just smooshing it in the ink and misting it to spread the colour across it, and then glued it to the back of the top tag.

Here you can see both coffin tags before I glued them together, you will see I have also added some crackle texture paste around parts of the edges of the base tag.
Sadly both of the Tim Holtz Halloween stamp sets have now sold out so maybe you've already got them so hopefully you find this as a little bit of inspiration of how you can use them.

  1. This is such a fun piece Amanda. Great grungy effects and just love how the quirky bird looks rather scared. Fabulous!

  2. Great to see that you can have both left and right hands with a bit of stamping ingenuity (I've got the set on order as part of my GD "payment" for SSS - still travelling across the Atlantic, evidently - or stuck in a UK warehouse somewhere...). Love the expression on the bird's face - hilarious. One sympathises! The whole coffin is brilliantly creepy.
