Textured Blooms by Fliss Goodwin

Hello! I have a mixed media piece of artwork to share this week which features some flowers that came about as the result of an accident which became a happy one and I don't know about you but I really do like a bit of serendipity at times. Read on to find out what happened.

Step by Step

The first step was to prepare my upright panel as I chose to use one of my favourites, the torn notepage topped one. I spritzed the top panel with Flat Matte Sprays in shades of Rose and Bluebell, allowing the colours to run and drip down the surface. I sprayed the surface by resting it on a large sheet of watercolour paper as I find that you tend to get spray mist on the surrounding area as well!

I repeated the spritzing several times to deepen the colour and at one point had to blot the panel a little with a paper kitchen towel (which came in handy a bit later on). Once it was dry, I used one of the texture script stamps with Archival Cactus Flower ink to add some interest.

I then scraped some texture paste coloured with a little light blue multi surface paint on the panel using an old store card. You don't need much as scraping it thinly gives a great textured effect. Once it was dry, I spritzed on some of the same flat matte sprays, repeating several times as the colour is quite subtle when it dries. I followed this with some more stamping with the script image and a circular texture stamp.

I made my flowers with the paper towel used to blot the panel which had lovely deep pinks and blues, toning perfectly with my background. I used my stamp platform for this as it helped to get a good impression on a rough surface.

I also used some of the misting overflow sheet so that I had varying shades of the colours and could use them to layer up the flowers. I stamped the centres on leftover bits of the original paper towel and the outer central bit on the overflow sheet. I also stamped some little buttons from a texture set on the overflow sheet to add to the flower centres.

I added a bit more stamping to the top panel with a texture stamp and the pink ink then stamped my Oscar Wilde quote on with black ink and heat embossed it with clear powder.

I spritzed the base with the pink and blue flat matte sprays in the same way as the top panel, blotting as necessary to achieve a similar coloured effect.

I layered the flowers up with craft glue and scrunched them gently when they were dry for a shabby effect. I then glued them to the panel to finish. The photo doesn't really do the actual texture justice but it does give a lovely look using the dyed paper towel, which was of course completely accidental!

The final step was to glue the top panel to the base with craft glue.
