MDF Upright - Frankie by Nikki Acton

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Nikki is now a
permanent member of our design team!

Hi everyone! I joined the That’s Crafty! design team late in 2016 but today see’s my first post on this blog. I thought I would share one of the designs I made for the Hochanda shows – using the MDF Cogs Upright and featuring my cat – Frankie. Here is how I altered the surface.

MDF Base

I added some DecoArt Sand Paste to the edges before painting it all in black gesso. When nearly dry I used the edge of my paint brush to make scratch marks in the gesso, adding a little more gesso to ensure I built some subtle texture.

Once dry I dry brushed the surface with white gesso and when dry added watery washes of PaperArtsy Claret and DecoArt – Prussian Blue paints. I added gilding wax to edges.

Photos

I printed some of my favourite photos on an ink jet printer on copier paper in black and white and sprayed with a matte spray to seal.

I die cut some circles from water colour paper and glued them together to create firm base (3 per photo) and adhered the images.

I added a little black gesso with my finger around the edges to create a border and once dry added Distress Collage Medium – Vintage to the image to age it and seal it further. Again I added gilding wax around the edges.

See you next week!

Nikki
