Did you know That's Crafty! will cut MDF shapes to
order? I really wanted a cake stand, but one I chose the decoration for,
not one made with china plates so they kindly cut the MDF circles and I got a
set of spindle doodads from a well known Auction site.
To start a light coat of Gesso on both sides of each circles. Next paint the underside of each circle using the Dylusions
paint – any type of paint will work I chose these for the bright colours. I did
2 coats. Then secure it with a
coat or two of gloss or satin of Varnish.
Next lay out the stamps on the large circle and line them up
with the centres of each stamp pointing to the circle.
Start stamping
your images in a circle using the Versamark and heat emboss as you go. Remember to keep your images lined up with
the hole, use a ruler if this helps.
If you find you have any “gaps” add in smaller stamps or parts of the
larger stamps to complete the circle. Do the same with the middle and small circles.
Next you need to decide whether to paint the images or the
background first. For practical reasons
of needing to get the painting done and the paints put away I did the images
first. I used a variety of Magicals and
Mica/Pigment powders mixed with Iridescent Medium and Gel Pens, as I wanted a
shimmer feel to the images.
As
there was already a lot of colour I went for one colour per circle, using the
Prima Art Alchemy Paints which matched the underside colour and carefully
painted in the background. When everything was painted I decided it needed more
stamping so added more in.
Finally I gave the undersides a couple of coats of the
DecoArt Media Satin Varnish on each side of the plates to protect from any
vicious sponge cakes and constructed it using the spindle doodads.
