Snow Globe by Laura

We released some brand new products this week and among them are some new acrylic stacks. When we were designing the vase/fish bowl stack, I knew straight away that I'd like to make it look like a snow globe and this is the result!

I started by penciling in the circle at the top of the mdf piece of the stack (I just used the side of the stack as a template). I then painted all of the mdf piece with PaperArtsy paint in Mermaid, avoiding the top that was going to be the globe shape and the bottom which I wanted to look like a wooden plinth.

Next I stamped the tree line from the Tim Holtz set. I didn’t want to use the bottom of this stamp, so I used one edge of the Clarity mat as a mask and stamped the image using StazOn in Olive Green. This was a double whammy, as the edge of the Clarity Mat is shaped like hills, so I had a nice edge to paint my snow up to which I did with the PaperArtsy Fresco Paint Snowflake (rather apt I thought J). I added a few very small blobs of paint to the sky, again using the Snowflake paint and covered the snow with Mod Podge Sparkle. I then painted the round area in at the top using DecoArt Media Carbon Black Paint. I used the Carbon Black on the bottom of the globe too, then painted it over with PaperArtsy Fresco Chocolate Pudding to make it look like wood.

The next layer is acrylic. I used a couple of the single stamps from the Tim Holtz set and stamped on the back of the acrylic using a layer of StazOn Spiced Chai with StazOn Olive Green on the top, as I wanted the trees to be quite a dark green. I then turned the acrylic over and painted snow highlights on the trees, again using the PaperArtsy Snowflake paint.

For my next acrylic layer, I simply used a Sharpie Extra Fine Marker in white to dot snowflakes on and then I turned this over and covered the whole of the back with Mod Podge Sparkle.

My final acrylic layer features the deer, which was stamped with a mixture of Jet Black and Spiced Chai StazOn and then for some colour contrast, I painted the back of the deer using PaperArtsy paint in Fawn.

  6. How amazing is this! Laura, this will make the most beautiful centrepiece for the festivities. I love the way the acrylic allows for that sense of depth, making this winter scene appear so realistic.
