Journal Your Art by Amanda Southern

Hi Everyone
Incase you missed it That's Crafty! launched lots of new products last week and you have probably already seemed some great makes from my team makes using these new products. There were fabulous new art journals, stamps, stencils and for the first time papers of which all were launched on Hochanda TV last Tuesday. The shows will still be available to watch again via Hochanda rewind service HERE just search by the date 11th & 12th February. We, the design team, had the chance to make samples for these shows so I am sharing with you some of the pages I made.

I have used the grey/whiteboard 8" x 6.5" art journal.

Here's What I Did:

Starting with the art journal and the Lights and Brights paper pack I covered both sides of each of the papers adhering the papers to the board using matte medium. Once they were dry I sanded off all the edges and re punched the holes. I love my painty backgrounds but these papers are ideal if you want to make quick backgrounds amongst many other things. I then started decorating the pages.

Without covering the background paper up too much I added stencilling through 2 of the new A4 stencils Word Search & Hex Net using That's Crafty! Multi Surface Paints. To tone that down I also added a light layering of white gesso. I cut out a piece from one of the papers to sit my journal title on and before adding it to the cover added some machine stitching to it along with a torn piece of washi tape. The CRE8 was added using again 2 more new A4 stencils Words & Numbers. The words Art Journal come from the new stamp set Lots of Words and the limited edition stamp from a previous That's Crafty! stamp set. Some additional smears of paint around the edges finish the cover.

Something different that you get with this journal is that you get different shaped pages and I just love this circular page. Again working over the paper background I added stencilling using the A4 stencils Numbers and the fine dots are from using a section of the Attitude is Everything stencil. Again adding some of the scraps from covering the pages and adding a little machine stitching to them. The words again come from the Lots of Words set along with the number 4 stamped from the alphabet set. The yellow circles are added using an older That's Crafty! stencil. Centre stage I have used one of Tim Holtz paper dolls that are sporting rather fetching hats made from scraps of the paper pack.

Another of the page shapes are tags, this is the vertical tag there is also a horizontal tag within the journal. The A4 Circles stencil comes into play on this tag using the smaller sized circles within this stencil (this is to become a workhorse stencil for sure). Several thought bubbles stencilled with paint and then stamped into, again using the new lots of words stamps. The word colourful using the Alphabet stamp set and the word thoughts from the Words stencil using texture paint and then paint added over the top. Stamps used are from a previously released That's Crafty! stamp range and the image coloured with Zig pens.

The final page I am sharing with you today again uses the new A4 Circles stencil and as this stencil also includes the negative you can use the circles as a mask. First was the stencilling in black using the Hex Nut stencil then I lay the circle in the centre of the page and using a large flat paintbrush I stroked paint outwards from the circle to create the circle frame. I then stamped the dancer into the centre and added the words (again from Lots of Words stamp set).

Here's What I Used:
That's Crafty! Paper Packs - I Used Lights & Brights Pack
That's Crafty! A4 Stencils  - All the NEW releases
Versafine Clair Ink Pads - Assorted colours
Washi Tape (mine came from my stash but lots of others)
Sewing Machine

I hope you have enjoyed the pages I've shared but more importantly all the fabulous new products that have just been launched. If you have ever wanted to start art journaling this is a fabulous journal to start with along with those of you that are seasoned art journal addicts.
Have a fabulous week and I will see you all next Tuesday
Love
Amanda X

  1. Well, those papers certainly fooled me - I thought you'd been busy at the gelli plate! - but you're so right about those times when you want a quick creative fix... these will start you off beautifully. Love the decorated pages, with extra touches of paint and layered imagery - very cool showcasing!
