It’s Snow Time! by Lynne Moncrieff

As I was packaging up a handmade gift to mail overseas (the gift was a mitten ornament), I wanted to include a card but the envelopes I had were not a suitable size. I wanted to present the gift and card tied together so I was really aiming for a smaller than usual size card/envelope.

Looking for an envelope I spied some small Kraft bags (I’d call them pockets), just the perfect size and suited the style of the homespun feel of the gift packaging for the actual mitten.

In the supply list I’ve noted a substitute for the bag I used. That’s Crafty! stocks Canvas Corp bags in white and also Kraft and in various sizes.

The card below is approx 5” x 3.2” and the bag/pocket, 6.5” x 3.5” when opened and 5.2” x 3.5” when closed.

Instructions

Card

The card might be small but there are a few different elements to it. For the Gesso and snowflake background I would advise preparing several A4 sheets at any one time so you have some to hand.

Cut Kraft cardstock to size before randomly applying Gesso, just skimming over the cardstock with a foam brush. Apply iridescent paste to the Snowflake stencil.

Once dry adhere panel to cardbase (made from white cardstock). Adhere torn lace and guipure lace to top edge.

Ink up the photo real stamp with Archival ink.

* my preference is to ink up the stamp with a brayer and my first choice of ink is Archival but as with anything, there are no rules, those are just my personal preferences.

* to achieve a stamped impression most resembling a photograph, stamp onto glossy cardstock.

Layer to cardbase with a panel comprising of the sentiment stamped onto a piece of scrap Kraft painted with Gesso, edged with pompom trim. To embellish this panel, apply Distress Stain Spray to a jingle bell, attaching to the pompom trim.

Create an embellishment by applying Gesso followed by Snowflake Paste to a That’s Crafty! snowflake, adorning with a button and tartan ribbon. Adhere to top corner of cardbase.

Finally, apply Glamour Dust to the card.

Pocket/Bag

Stamp star and date onto Kraft cardstock prepared with Gesso. Fussy cut, distress edges and apply Glamour Dust. Adhere stamped date to centre of the pocket/bag. Create a faux button appearance by stitching the stamped star to a piece of ticking fabric. Finally, attach a piece of seam binding and tartan ribbon to top corner.

Until next time

Lynne

  13. The iridescent paste for the snowflakes works beautifully! What a wonderful winter background. The idea of the using the kraft card stock really adds to the vintage look. I love that you utilize that method. This is such a wonderful stamped image. I think the embellishment you made really sets this card off! The snowflake and the tartan ribbon made a really awesome embellishment. Thanks for sharing with us, Lynne. inkybru xx
